The Shallow Marine Surveys Group exists to coordinate and conduct assessments of the status of inshore resources around the Falkland Islands.
Falklands Conservation is a non-governmental organisation working to protect all the wildlife in the Falkland Islands for future generations. It undertakes practical conservation projects, surveys and scientific studies, conducts annual monitoring of seabird populations, rescues wildlife in trouble, publishes guides and information on many aspects of the Falkland Islands environment, and involves islanders of all ages in its activities, including running a WATCH group for children. Falklands Conservation is a partner of BirdLife International, a worldwide network which aims to conserve wild birds, their habitats and global diversity.
In 1985 South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands became a distinct U.K. Overseas Territory with a Commissioner as head of the Government. It had previously been part of the Falkland Islands Dependencies. The Commissioner for South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) has vested in him, legal, financial and administrative authority and responsibility for the governance of the Territory. Nigel Haywood is the current Commissioner. The Chief Executive Officer (Dr Martin Collins) deals with policy matters and is also the Director of Fisheries. The Executive Officer (Richard McKee) addresses, tourism and expeditions and manages fishery patrols. Dr Jennifer Lee is the Environmental Officer. A Financial Secretary and Attorney General hold similar appointments in the Falkland Islands' Government.
The Falkland Islands are a United Kingdom Overseas Territory by choice. Supreme authority is vested in Her Majesty The Queen and exercised by a Governor on her behalf, with the advice and assistance of the Executive Council and Legislative Assembly.

The New Island Conservation Trust is a non-profit, charitable conservation body. They are an independent organisation, responsible for ensuring the ongoing protection of the wildlife sanctuary of New Island in the Falkland Islands.
The Alfred Wegener Institute carries out research in the Arctic and Antarctic as well as in the high and mid latitude oceans. The institute coordinates German polar research and makes available to national and international science important infrastructure, e.g. the research ice breaker ÔÇ£PolarsternÔÇØ and research stations in the Arctic and Antarctic.
